Where Aviation and LA Dining First Took Flight

The Proud Bird has been part of the Los Angeles landscape since 1967, born from a simple idea: create a gathering place where great food meets the excitement of flight. What began as an American Restaurant beside the runways has evolved into one of LA's most distinctive dining destinations, offering guests a front-row seat to the constant motion of LAX.

A salute to achievements in aviation, The Proud Bird offers a front-row view of planes approaching LAX for landing. The restaurant was the brainchild of David Tallichet (1922–2007), who founded Specialty Restaurants Corporation and developed a number of beloved destination restaurants across the United States.

David Tallichet served in World War II as a pilot, flying over 20 combat missions during his service. Also known as a visionary in the restaurant industry, Tallichet paid homage to his passion for aviation by including this theme at The Proud Bird.

A Landmark Food Hall Inspired by Aviation

From the beginning, aviation has shaped everything about The Proud Bird. The property sits along LAX's flight path, giving visitors unmatched views of planes taxiing, taking off, and landing throughout the day. Over time, the space grew to include detailed aviation displays and full-scale WWII aircraft replicas that honor the pilots, engineers, and visionaries who defined early air travel. These installations remain central to the guest experience, creating a unique backdrop you won't find at any other food hall or restaurant near the airport.

Over the last 50 years, The Proud Bird has built a loyal and dedicated following within the community, amassing over 7,000 fans via social media including Facebook, Instagram, and the Loyalty program. These guests have celebrated countless weddings, social events, birthday parties, holiday celebrations and weekend brunches at The Proud Bird and it is clear through the guests' comments that The Proud Bird has made a lasting and endearing impression.

How Did the Proud Bird Get Its Name?

The Proud Bird name was inspired by the 1960’s Continental Airlines marketing slogan, “The Proud Bird with the Golden Tail.” Continental Airlines painted the tails of its DC-10’s gold, hoping to reinforce the airline’s image as high quality with elaborate service. Under the direction of Bob Six, Continental was one of the early builders of the U.S. aviation industry.

A Modern Relaunch with a New Vision

While The Proud Bird honors the spirit of its original concept, today's experience is designed for how people dine now. The transition from a traditional restaurant to a multi-concept food hall created a fresh, modern atmosphere where guests can explore diverse flavors in a casual, welcoming environment. The Mile High Club Bar, large indoor and outdoor seating areas, and brand new arcade add to the vibrant energy that defines the property today.

LA's Hottest Food Hall

The Proud Bird was named LA's Hottest Food Hall by Food Network. It features a new look and feel as a reimagined Food Bazaar with five culinary kitchens, including The Coop: Chicken & Waffles, Hefty's Burgers & Handhelds, Bludso's BBQ, and more.

The space has an open-air feel and industrial accents to celebrate the power of flight with floor-to-ceiling windows that provide panoramic views of LAX's approach runways. Upon entering the food hall, guests are greeted by a suspended P-40 Flying Tiger replica and aircraft memorabilia – a nod to David C. Tallichet Jr.'s and all veterans' service during the Second World War.

Communal tables, lounge seating, and the sleek Mile High Club bar and lounge surrounds the open kitchen area and provides elevated food and beverage experiences.
